Tribute To The Forgotten Fathers

Published June 18, 2010 by Elspeth

My husband only reads my site once or twice a month anyway, so I decided to forgo the traditional “my husband is a great dad” Father’s Day post. Instead of continuing what seems like an endless series of recent posts about how much I love and appreciate my husband (which I gather are getting boring at this point), I wanted to mark this Father’s Day by noting that despite the twisted images of  Western media and culture, the world is still full of great men, great husbands, and great fathers.

Tribute To The Forgotten Fathers.

For every buffoon of a man depicted on the big screen or lampooned in the average television commercial, there are even more competent men full of vision, discipline and purpose.

For every commitment phobic, Peter Pan portrait of a man that we are expected to believe is the norm, there are men who love their wives as Christ loves the church, giving themselves for her daily, and doing so with a heart of love.

For every man portrayed as a porn-addicted, video game playing no account, there are even more hardworking, industrious men who contribute to society in ways increasingly never acknowledged.

For every skirt-chasing playboy running game on women in a singles bar, there are even more men who wish they could meet at least one woman worthy to be called a wife, and coming up empty. After all, a virtuous woman is a rare and precious gem.

For every deadbeat dad who skips out on his kids, there are even more men who desperately want to be involved in the lives of their kids, but have been told by the legal system and their childrens’ mother that all they’re needed for is the monthly check.

For every husband portrayed as a clueless clown who flops on the couch with a beer at the end of the day while his wife, the grownup, runs the house and raises the kids, there are more men who eat dinner with their families, read to their kids, pray with them and tuck them in at night. And even after a hard day at work, he spends the time necessary to make his wife feel loved, safe, and secure in his leadership of the family.

The news of  real mens’ death has been greatly exaggerated. Contrary to popular opinion, what we have here is not a crisis of men only, but of women as well. On this Father’s Day, I offer a challenge to those of us blessed to be married to men of standards. Don’t just bless him on Father’s Day. Bless him every day.

It seems we have a great deal to be thankful for.

To the few fathers that I know are reading…

Happy Father’s Day.

Y’all have a blessed, relaxing, worshipful weekend!

  • There are so many “forgotten” men who truly do desire to be good fathers.

And let us not forget to thank our heavenly Father for His care!

As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him.
For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.

    Psalm 103:13-14

  • Yes, Heather, of course I agree with you! It was never my intent to neglect to thank Our Heavenly Father for HIs care.

Without His care, where would we be????

I have thought a bit in recent weeks about the numerous reports on men and women, and the changing cultural landscape, and it occurred to me that there is a serious assault on men as leaders and husbands.

In fact, I equate it with an assault on God’s authority as well. In this post, I simply wanted to point out that there are good, godly men, and they are not as hard to find as we are being led to believe. That cannot possibly be the case as I hear from numerous women like you and me every day who are married to them, or who have them for fathers, brothers, and pastors.

But unless women begin to reject the lie that “there are no good men”, the lie will continue to spread. Of course, one could also argue that there are “no good women” either.

You know what Jesus said: There is none good but the Father.

  • I didn’t figure you’d forgotten.

But I often do, so I thought I’d take the opportunity to remind myself “out loud” ;)

There do seem to be at least a few who are REALLY LOUD about their opinion that there are no good men. And because no one is perfect but God, it is easy to pick apart others in order to elevate one’s own imperfect self. :(

  • Just stop by to say I hope your husband has a great father’s day…Have a great week to you and your family..God Bless you
