I’ve been contemplating this hymn a lot lately as I deal with some “stuff” of this life. And then we sang this in church this morning. God is amazing in delivering his message to us just when we need it. Thank you so much for posting this!
Yes, I had read about that before.
Not quite sure that this arrangement captures this hymn very well…..the picture is of a heart breaking over the deaths of his four daughters, and the eminently danceable rhythm clashes with that. Maybe if JOC had voices more like Dylan, they could pull it off, but….
(nothing against modern music, I just don’t think this particular arrangement “works”)
BTW, happy late birthday from Mr. & Mrs. Bike Bubba!
Terry,
This is also a favorite of mine…although “favorite” seems a bit flippant a term in light of it’s origin.
Still, it speaks to my soul in times of sorrow as it is a poignant reminder that the God of all comfort gives to His children a peace that surpasses the human ability to understand in times of heart-rending pain.
I appreciate the emotion conveyed in Selah’s rendition :
Thank you for the birthday wishes Mrs. Bike Bubba!
And because I too, am usually a little wary of modern renditions of the great hymns, I totally understand how one might not fully appreciate Jars of Clay’s rendition of it.
@Heather:
Thanks for this addition. I really enjoy Selah and this is a beautifully done version of the hymn as well.
@Cane and Joanna:
I’d never read this history of the song, so thanks for the enlightenment.
Now you’re speaking my language. Love. Favorite hymn EVER, favorite band EVER.
Yay! Love Jars of Clay!
So enjoy your Sunday Worship posts.
Joanna, do you know the origin of the song?
